California Association of Nutrition Directors for the Elderly
Providing Quality Nutrition Services to California Seniors
 for over 25 years

Dear Colleague:
My name is Paul Downey and I am the new President of the California Association of Nutrition Directors for the Elderly (CANDE). My “day job” is running Senior Community Centers in San Diego. We provide more than 350,000 meals annually to low-income seniors along with housing and an array of social and healthcare services.
I am involved with CANDE because of its direct impact on the growth and success of Senior Community Centers. At the Annual Conference and through newsletter updates, my staff gets the cutting-edge information they need to produce tasty and nutritious meals for our seniors. CANDE’s advocacy efforts have directly helped my agency’s bottom-line by focusing on increased funding from the State and Federal levels. There is also a wonderful camaraderie that emerges through interaction with others doing what you do every day. Sometimes it is nice to know you are not alone!
CANDE has been in existence since 1974 and we are the only statewide organization devoted to senior nutrition issues. Our member agencies serve over 20 million congregate and home delivered meals annually to more than 220,000 elderly and disabled persons across the State.
All of us in the aging field are acutely aware of the demographic and funding challenges ahead. We can only meet those challenges by banding together and speaking with a collective voice. Please consider renewing your membership or joining CANDE today!
Some of the other membership benefits of CANDE include: weekly emails from GrantStation Insider regarding upcoming funding opportunities; workshops; conferences; newsletters; periodic advocacy alerts; and our ongoing web presence. In addition, members can obtain information such as census and demographic data, legislative updates, and most importantly, CANDE provides a mechanism for sharing with your peers.
I urge you to consider the value of the collaborative voice that CANDE represents and the added benefits we can offer. Please join today!

Respectfully,
Paul Downey
President

P.S. Please feel free to copy (and/or PDF) this packet and forward to any of your colleagues who you think may be interested in joining CANDE.

P.P.S. I look forward to meeting each of you at our Annual Conference next May 28-30 in Sacramento!
